How I score snacks

Every review gets the same treatment: three things decide the score out of 5, and the score decides the verdict. Nothing is sponsored, and if something was sent to me, I say so in the review.

Taste

Does it actually taste good, and does it taste like what it promises on the packet? This carries the most weight.

Value

What I paid versus what I got. A great snack at a silly price loses points; a cheap surprise gains them.

Findability

Can you buy it without hunting? Widely stocked scores higher than a one-off import I paid a premium for.

What the numbers mean

  • 5I'd buy it every week.
  • 4Buy again, happily.
  • 3Worth trying once.
  • 2Not for me.
  • 1Skip it.

Buy it, or skip it

The number is only half the answer. Every review ends with one of three verdicts so you can decide in a second, standing in the aisle.

Buy again

Usually 4 and up

Good enough that it goes back in the basket. If you only try one thing on the shelf, make it this.

Worth trying once

Usually 3 to 3.5

Fun, interesting or nearly there, but not something I would restock. Grab it if the flavour sounds like you.

Skip it

Usually 2.5 and below

The money is better spent elsewhere. I will always say exactly what let it down.

A few ground rules

  • Half points exist, so a 3.5 is a real answer and not a dodge.
  • Every snack is tried more than once before it gets a number.
  • Limited editions are judged on taste and price, not on how rare they are.
  • Scores can change if a recipe changes, and the review says when that happens.
  • Makeup is judged the same way: how it performs, what it costs, how easy it is to get.
